Once you get passed the birds and the bees conversation, many parents may assume that they’re in the clear regarding “the sex talk.” But talking to kids about sexuality in fact only begins there. Even though your kids have the whole sperm and egg concept down, many still need guidance with regard to their safety and emotional well-being. Even if your kids are planning on abstaining from sex, boys and girls may need some advice on how to communicate that to their peers, as well as how to recognize sexual boundaries in others.

So in honor of St. Valentine and talking to your kids about romance, don’t forget to stress the following when the time is appropriate.

How about making sure that your children understand that there is no such thing as “safe sex”, only risk reduction? No matter how careful a couple THINKS they are being, there is always a chance intercourse will result in a pregnancy or a STD infection. 50% of all unplanned pregnancies are the result of contraceptive failure, and even doubling up on contraception isn’t foolproof. I personally know several women who doubled up and thought they were using the contraception properly and STILL wound up pregnant.
