New York Mother Makes Living As A Professional Cuddler And I’m The Sucker That’s Still Waiting Tables

I work really hard to make ends meet and feed my child. During the week I work as a waitress. On the weekends I’m a freelance writer and photographer. I really like all the work I do, but it is a constant hustle and very exhausting. I’m pretty much always in need of a nap.

Which is why when I read a story today about a woman, Jackie Samuel, who lays around all day cuddling people for a living,  my head almost exploded. From the Daily Mail:

The 29-year-old is a professional cuddler. She turned to snuggling with strangers to help pay for her studies and provide for her young son.

She can make $260 a day and cuddles with up to 30 men a week – including pensioners and war veterans.

She does this in her own home, which she has dubbed, “The Snuggery.” She advertises her services online and charges $60 an hour. So the time that I have spent writing today, I could have made $360 laying around cuddling someone? At first, I felt like a sucker for not thinking of this myself. Then I remembered that I pretty much hate it when people are in my personal space, and could never do this for a living. Here’s how she describes her “talent:”

‘I think clients come to me for all different kinds of reasons. Some of my older clients, their wives have passed away, and they just need someone to be with, like someone to experience touch with.

‘Some of the younger clients are between relationships, some are in problematic relationships, and some people are just really curious and they come to just find out what it’s going to be like.’

Maybe I am just a jaded New Yorker who is totally addicted to personal space, but – ew. I can’t even tell you how many times I have dreamt of having the room in my apartment for a California King, so I could finally have my own section of the bed. I can’t even imagine willingly inviting strangers to jump into bed with me, or lay next to me on the couch. It’s too bad though, because she’s located in New York and taking on cuddle “apprentices.”

I think I’ll stick to writing and serving wine.
