Marissa Mayer’s Pregnant Promotion Equated To The Odds Of Hiring A Yeti And Other Twitter Adventures

marissa mayerSo in case you were under a rock this morning, or not on your Twitter feed — same deal — Marissa Mayer of Google has been hired as the president and CEO of Yahoo. As if that wasn’t enough good news for women working outside the home to sprinkle into their morning coffee, the mogul announced that she and her husband are expecting a baby this October. The pairing couldn’t be more momentous as Marissa, already deemed one of Fortune’s 50 Most Powerful Women, will now be the only pregnant CEO of a Fortune 500 company — ever.

Yet, as much as the announcement produced audible applause all through the Twittersphere, the repeated headlines and pats on the back have highlighted a rarity that shouldn’t be one at all: a woman successfully navigating the career ladder with a baby on the way. As much as Mayer’s promotion is quite literally the promotion heard around the world, the massive press coverage has revealed once again a workplace structure that consistently refuses to accommodate families. Hence, Mayer is presented as the brilliant anomaly and it’s huge flippin’ news that a pregnant woman of all people has a lucrative and powerful job. So from the straight up mockery to the legitimate criticism, people have plenty to say about Mayer’s big pregnant promotion.
